12-YEAR_OLD ARMED ROBBER
Everyone is talking about the case of a 12-year-old Poughkeepsie kid arrested for trying to rob a woman near the train station with what appeared to be a handgun. A passing patrol car observed the little thug as he accosted the woman and arrested him at gunpoint. The "gun" turned out to be a BB gun. Is this kid a poor misguided boy from a poor family and no father? Probably but try telling that to the poor woman he attempted to rob. I also recall I was over six feet tall at 12 so he might not have been too non-threatening in appearance. I'm also willing to bet his victim was coming home from work at 5:30pm. What do we do with kids like this who grow up in a culture of violence and total disregard for conventional society or rules. It might be time to roll back the clock and lock these miscreants up. If we don't they will simply proceed down the road and become full time adult criminals. There should also be penalties and restitution imposed on whatever passes for parents. Lastly, imagine if it had been dark and the cop shot this kid with a gun in his hand. Who would the bad guy be? What would you suggest society do with this kid?

The kid and his so called parents have to be brought to task on this crime.A relative of ours 77 yrs old was pummeled to the ground and beat and kicked in the face and head by 3 to 4 youths in the same area recently in a attempted robbery even though he had told them he was carrying no money. The complete disregard by these savage kids is intolerable there has to be justice served on them because its just a matter of time before one of these attacks turns deadly for a victim or the attackers.
I agree, we should show these miscreants no mercy; mercy is for the weak.
Also I have to give you kudos for making such well thought out assumptions about the boy being from a poor family, probably having no father, and being 6 feet tall. If you were 6 feet tall at 12 all kids must be, right? I also agree with your premise that turning the clocks back to an earlier time, when white people could be more open about their bigotry towards the lower classes and just slam the jailhouse door on these children and get them out of our sight, so that we don't have to be burdened with the thoughts of their lack of opportunity. Let's face it, if we don't put them behind bars where they belong, they will grow up to be life long adult criminals; jail has always been the best way to turn a child around and get them on the straight and narrow. I defy anyone to defy that logic! Finally, what ARE we expected to do? Should we fully fund all NYS schools, including urban ones, so that children have access to every possible chance to experience that which their upper class counter parts get to? Nah, that would mean asking the rich to pay for their fair share of taxes and that is just stupid socialist thinking and should be crushed just like the hopes and dreams if children like this. Putting the work into community development, after school programs, and education enrichment is too hard, this is America these kids can do it themselves, don't be looking for hand outs on my block.
The fact that you are poor or raised in a broken family doesnt excuse the crime,it is definately the parent or parents lack of instilling whats right and wrong in these kids thats the problem ,and the parent or parents should be held just as accountable. My siblings and I came from a poor and broken home and there are none of us out on the streets robbing and creating mayhem. Our parent took the to teach us right from wrong so that excuse is BS!
The person suggesting a racist motive is one of the reasons we never get ahead of crime. The vast majority of crime is perpetrated by white people by virtue of the population imbalance. It is also true that blacks as a percentage of their population committ more crime than whites. It is also true blacks have a higher rate of unemployment and poverty than whites and crime follows poverty. That being said, crime is unacceptable in a civilized society and if the family structure and cultural mores can no longer persuade even the poorest among us to obey the law, it's up to law enforcement and the judicial system to insure the safety of law abiding citizens. So stop playing the tired race card and direct your anger at negligent and absent fathers and mothers.
