Now that Team Obama has clinched the Democratic nomination, it looks like they're starting to play their bench. That's an old athletic term referencing the tendency of managers to rest their starters while they look ahead to the playoffs. Often teams clinch a playoff spot before the season officially ends and there's no point in getting anyone hurt or wasting energy on contests that no longer mean anything.
Team Obama knows the primary season is over and they've won the pennant. The smart thing to do is rest and conserve resources for the November election. And as often happens in sports, teams that lost during the regular season still try to rough up the pennant winners just for bragging rights. But beating them in a meaningless game can't obscure the fact you still lost the pennant. Hillary's kidding herself if she thinks beating Obama's bench warmers in West Virginia means anything. He's already focused on John McCain. Hillary's close to irrelevant.
